Two sides of responsible gambling

The aim of responsible gambling is for play to stay conscious, controlled entertainment: the risk of it getting out of hand should stay small and addiction should not arise at all.

One side is the operator. Sections 13 to 16 of Act No. 186/2016 Coll. require it to equip players with tools and information for safe play; this applies to everyone, KAIZEN GAMING CZ LIMITED not excepted. In practice that means money and time limits, explanations of the risks and of the option to exclude yourself, and protection of minors. The other side is you: whoever notices how they play will spot the warning signs in time.

When to be alert

Problem gambling does not announce itself all at once. Pay attention if you notice in yourself or in someone close to you that:

  • the gambling budget is regularly exceeded and money is borrowed to play;
  • losses are "made up" with more play, which is known as chasing losses;
  • stakes keep growing and play becomes ever more frequent;
  • work, school or family are pushed aside because of gambling;
  • gambling carries on despite debts or quarrels and is hidden from others;
  • being unable to play brings restlessness, irritability or anxiety, and both mind and body suffer.

If any of this sounds familiar, use the prevention tools or turn to specialists.

Tools in your account: money and time

Every registered Betano player has all of the following tools in their user account; the operator provides them under Sections 15 to 16 of Act No. 186/2016 Coll.

Money

  • Deposits: a cap per day, week or month. Whoever reaches it cannot send more money until the period is over.
  • Stakes and losses: an upper bound on the volume of stakes or on the net loss within a chosen period. Once it is hit, the system interrupts play.

Time

  • Time limit: how much time per day or week you may give to playing.
  • Reality check: a regular notice of how long you have been playing.
  • Time-out: 24 hours, 7 days or 30 days with no log-in and no play; when the period is over, the account is active once more.

Setting a limit, lowering it or cancelling it is up to you, whenever you wish. Raising one takes patience: the cooling-off period lasts at least 24 hours.

Panic button

For moments when you need to stop at once, there is the panic button in the user interface. Every registered player may use it. A single press means the system automatically disconnects you from all of the operator's online platforms and you will not be able to play any gambling game for 48 hours. Right afterwards you can apply for an entry in the Register of Excluded Persons (RVO).

The duty to have a panic button applies to online gambling and gaming halls from 1. 7. 2024; it was introduced by Section 16bb of Act No. 186/2016 Coll.

Self-exclusion and the Register of Excluded Persons

You can ask for a longer break or a complete end to gambling yourself. Section 16 and Section 16b of Act No. 186/2016 Coll. give players the right to require exclusion from the operator, either for a time or for good. The request can be made in the user account, or through the gambling operator.

Self-exclusion links to the Register of Excluded Persons (RVO), which the Ministry of Finance of the Czech Republic administers under Act No. 186/2016 Coll. Anyone listed there cannot play with any operator licensed in the Czech Republic, and can have the entry deleted after 1 year at the soonest. Besides people who signed up themselves, the register also holds persons excluded directly by law: for instance those facing enforcement or insolvency proceedings, and recipients of some benefits.

Four routes lead to an entry: a request in the user account with the operator, confirmation after pressing the panic button, the data box of the Ministry of Finance of the Czech Republic, or a personal visit to Czech POINT.

Gambling only from 18

Under Act No. 186/2016 Coll., gambling is allowed only from the age of 18, and watching over this is the operator's job. It checks each player's age and identity, for example via BankID or by some other method, first at registration and again before a win is paid out.

Seven questions for self-reflection

The questions are based on the PGSI questionnaire (Problem Gambling Severity Index). It is not a diagnosis, just a mirror; answer for yourself and without embellishment.

  1. Does more money end up going on gambling than you wanted?
  2. Do you sometimes tell yourself you should play less?
  3. Does your conscience bother you because of gambling?
  4. Have you kept playing just to make up for a loss?
  5. Do your duties or relationships pay the price for your gambling?
  6. Has anyone pointed out to you that gambling is a problem for you?
  7. Have you taken out a loan in order to play?

Did you answer "yes" more than once? Then it makes sense to switch on the prevention tools or to talk to specialists. The test is for orientation only and cannot replace a professional diagnosis.
